At-Tariq 86:5

The passage builds an argument in four short sentences.

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ

Let man consider what he was created from

At-Tariq 86:5 · Translation: talal-itani

"Fa-l-yanẓuri al-insānu mimma khuliqa" (let the human look at what he was made from) — a call. "Min māʾin dāfiq" — a propelled, gushing water, ejected under pressure. "Yakhruju min bayni al-ṣulbi wa-l-tarāʾib" — between the loins and the breast-bones (a region shared in the bodily geography of woman and man). The closing line: "innahu ʿalā rajʿihi la-qādir" (He is indeed able to bring him back) — the argument closes: the One who built a great being from a tiny beginning can rebuild the same being.

Observation

In reproductive biology the start of fertilization (ejaculation) is a pressurized micro-flow; from a single fertilized cell a 37-trillion-cell adult human emerges. The transformation lies within the field of observation. The verse's phrase "min māʾin dāfiq" should not be read as a scientific description; it records an observation already open to the human grasp of the day — that a great being arises from a flow ejected under pressure. The image of "rajʿ" (return) is the symbolic reversal of the great production back to the small beginning.

Exegesis

Classical commentators preserve two readings of "ṣulb–tarāʾib": al-Rāzī reads it as the shared geography of the male-and-female contribution; Ibn Kathīr holds the phrase to point to the male body alone. Both readings are conveyed together; the verse's real weight does not lie in this detail but in the argument "small beginning → great being → return is possible."
