Al-'Alaq 96:1

The first verses revealed open with a command: "iqraʾ" — recite, read.

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

Read: In the Name of your Lord who created

Al-'Alaq 96:1 · Translation: talal-itani

Image

A substance: the human's origin in "ʿalaq" (a clinging, a hanging thing). A repetition: "iqraʾ." An instrument: the pen. A consequence: "ʿallama l-insāna mā lam yaʿlam" — He taught the human what he did not know. Five verses, five steps. Creation and reading, human and pen, set side by side along a single arc.

Observation

The verse's emphasis does not lie in the embryological detail of the word "ʿalaq" but on the bridge "khalaqa → ʿallama" (He created → He taught). From the human sciences the ground beneath this bridge is filled by a single observation: as a species, humans have made learning not merely an adaptation but a mode of being. Writing, the pen, symbol-use are a cultural inheritance passed from one generation to the next; every new infant acquires this inheritance by learning it within a lifetime. Neuroscience accounts for this not through biological evolution but through learning and plasticity — language and writing are structures re-shaped in every individual. The verse sums the whole field in a single clause: "He taught what was not known."

Exegesis

Exegetes note that the verse's first command — "iqraʾ" — marks the passage from a wordless prophetic sending to a sending through words. Al-Rāzī observes that "ʿalaq" stands for the lowliest beginning of creation and "pen" for the highest endowment: the two extremes are named in a single breath. Ibn Kathīr widens the scope of "mā lam yaʿlam" — it is not only book-knowledge but the accumulated knowledge on which an entire civilization rests.
