Al-Jathiyah 45:3

These three verses form a contracting ring of contemplation.

إِنَّ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

In the heavens and the earth are proofs for the believers

Al-Jathiyah 45:3 · Translation: talal-itani

Image

Each verse takes up a different scale and addresses a different "audience." First the heavens and the earth → for the believers. Then the human's own creation and living creatures → for those of sure faith. Finally everyday phenomena (night and day, rain, wind) → for those who reason. The ordering is telling: the greatest scale is offered to the least prepared viewer, and the smallest, most ordinary scale to the most attentive mind. The depth of contemplation, then, is not far away — it is hidden close at hand.

Observation

Biologists describe the concept of the 'life cycle' as birth, growth, reproduction, and death forming an interconnected loop; the remains of one organism become the starting material for another. In cell biology this cycle also operates at the molecular level: carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms are continuously transferred among living beings, and additionally the day-night alternation directly affects the sleep-wake and feeding patterns of organisms.

Exegesis

Classical exegetes say this ordering is not accidental. Al-Rāzī stresses that to look at the nearest sign can be enough for contemplation, more than the most distant: one need not ascend to the heavens — one's own making is already a sign. Al-Zamakhsharī notes that three distinct faculties are named across the three verses: īmān, yaqīn, ʿaql. One believes, one knows with certainty, one understands. Contemplation is the place where these three states flow into one another.
